Sun & skin facts to remember

Even if you feel in control of many aspects of your life during your teens, often times it seems like your skin is impossible to manage. Thanks to hormones and your teen lifestyle, acne and blackheads keep on appearing overnight, no matter what skin care products you are using.

Along with all the worries of getting high grades and social dilemmas, the desire to look good remains top of mind. Don’t be so hard on yourself. By knowing your skin type and establishing a simple skin care routine comprising of cleansing two times a day, moisturising, and protecting, you can easily manage your skin issues and get flawless skin.

Here are few basic yet important skin & sun facts for you to keep in mind while putting together a winning skin care regime.

Skin needs to be cleansed effectively morning and night

Keeping your face dirt, germ, and excess oil-free is very important, especially as teen skin faces numerous challenges already. Properly cleansing your skin with the right face wash in the morning and evening not only removes dirt, germs, and excess oil, it also helps in the regeneration of new skin cells. Know your skin type, and choose your facial cleanser accordingly. For example, if you struggle with acne, use a specially formulated acne face wash.  For blackheads, use a blackhead clearing cleanser.

Using a good face scrub once a week is also very beneficial for skin rejuvenation.  Also, never sleep with your make-up on!  It is one of the biggest obstacles between you and your clearest skin.

Clear skin needs clean diet

Fast food and energy drinks are fun when you are out with your friends, but all the grease, sugar and chemicals can reflect on your skin. Avoid unhealthy foods and drinks as much as you can and opt for clean eating—that means lots of fresh fruits and vegetables! The antioxidants in fresh fruits and vegetables reduce skin inflammation while vitamins and minerals give you that pretty glow you desire.

Moisturiser is necessary for all types of skin

The common myth that people with oily skin don’t need moisturiser is totally mistaken! Moisturising is extremely important for all skin types, and you should moisturise your face after every wash. If you have oily skin, choose a light, oil-free moisturiser. If you have acne, use a dual action moisturiser that moisturises your skin while fighting your acne.  Just remember that if you don’t use moisturiser after wash, that dryness can lead to more acne, as well as blotching and skin irritation.

Young skin is more at risk of sun damage

No one wants to hide from the sun when having fun outdoors. But if you go out without sun protection, your youthful skin is at a greater risk than adult skin. Know different ways to minimize sun damage, and you can still enjoy the outdoors fully.

  1.  Minimize sun exposure between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
  2. Find out a suitable sunscreen with high SPF and broad spectrum (UVA & UVB Rays) protection. (Increase sun protection usage if you are using topical acne treatments.)
  3. Remember, covering face with a hat or with cloth doesn’t entirely protect from sun damage. Use sunscreen every single day, no matter the season or the weather!

The foundation of beautiful and healthy skin at all ages starts with a consistent care routine, and it’s best to start it as early as possible.
